How to take sewing measurements

Taking sewing measurements is an essential skill for anyone who wants to make their own clothing or make adjustments to existing garments.

Although it may seem intimidating at first, taking body measurements is actually a simple process that can be mastered with practice and patience. In this article, I will guide you through the steps necessary to take accurate sewing measurements.

Before you begin, it’s important to note that you’ll need some basic sewing tools. These include a tape measure, a notebook, and a pencil. It’s also helpful to have a large mirror and a friend or family member who can help you take measurements.

BUST MEASUREMENT

To measure your bust, place the tape around the fullest part of your bust and make sure it is level across your back. Make sure the tape measure is not too tight or too loose, as this can affect the accuracy of the measurement.

WAIST MEASUREMENT

To measure your waist, place the tape around the narrowest part of your waist, just above your belly button. Make sure the tape measure is level across your back and is not too tight or too loose.

HIP MEASUREMENT

To measure your hips, place the tape measure around the widest part of your hips and make sure it is level across your back. Make sure the tape measure is not too tight or too loose.

SHOT MEASUREMENT

The shot measurement is the distance from the top of the hip bone to the ground. To take this measurement, stand with your feet together and place the measuring tape on top of your hip bone. Next, take the tape measure down to the floor.

LEG LENGTH MEASUREMENT

To measure leg length, stand with your feet together and place the tape measure on the top of your thigh. Next, take the tape measure down to the floor. Make sure the tape measure is level and not too tight or too loose.

SLEEVE LENGTH MEASUREMENT

To measure sleeve length, place your right arm at your side and measure from the base of your neck to your right shoulder. Next, measure from shoulder to wrist. Repeat this process on the left arm.

SHOULDER WIDTH MEASUREMENT

To measure shoulder width, place the tape measure at the base of your neck and bring the tape measure down to your shoulder. Next, measure from your right shoulder bone to your left shoulder bone.

NECK CONTOUR MEASUREMENT

To measure your neck circumference, place the tape measure around the base of your neck and make sure it is level across your back. Make sure the tape measure is not too tight or too loose.

BACK WIDTH MEASUREMENT

To measure the width of your back, place the tape on the top of your shoulders and bring it to the bottom of your back. Make sure the tape measure is level and not too tight or too loose.

TOTAL LENGTH MEASUREMENT

To measure the total length, stand with your feet together and take the tape measure from the base of your neck to the floor. Make sure the tape measure is level and not too tight or too loose.

Taking sewing measurements may seem intimidating at first, but with practice and patience, anyone can do it.

Once you have your measurements, you’ll be ready to start making your own clothes or making adjustments to existing garments.
